I direct an Ethnography Research Group. This is an informal gathering of undergraduate students to study, practice, and apply ethnographic methods of inquiry to computing topics. The main research methodology we conduct are semi-structured interviews, thematic analysis, and grounded theory. Current topics we are examining are:

  • CS Education:

    • help-seeking behaviors of CS students in algorithm courses.

    • gamification in CS Education using a critical and close reading approach.

    • social, cultural, and economic factors impacting continued success in CS student.

    • TA-Instructor Coordination in Requirements Engineering Courses

  • Human-Computer Interaction

    • viewership and engagement motivations for lucky-bag and gacha livestreams.

    • representation of time and rhythm in rhythm games through an HCI interaction theory lens.

    • parents’ use of food content on social media and its impact on family healthy eating negotiations.

    • Taiwanese Kuai-Kuai phenomena and other emotional labor scapegoating practices.

Past topics include:

  • Student expectations of and experiences with computer science undergraduate TAs (2024-2025).

  • Comparing professional requirements engineering practices to student perspectives (2023-2024).

During my doctorate studies, I was part of IU’s Authentic User Experience Lab led by Norman Su. My research focused on examining video game speedrunners’ livestreaming practices and how this subculture’s livestreaming practices inform HCI designers exploring the physical-virtual boundaries and interactions. Other topics I explored during my time as a graduate student working in this lab include:

  • Teenagers’ interactions with food content on social media and its influence on their perspectives of healthy eating.

  • The use of design fictions for collaborative practices and value negotiations between engineers and designers.

  • The practice of esport casters and their use of supporting technologies.
